Serco Stuffs up at Mount Eden: fined $150k

I belong to the tradition that believes that the taking of a citizen's liberty should be the role and responsibility of the state. It should not be reduced to a cost-benefit analysis. So I opposed the Serco Mount Eden contract. And, it seems, for good reasons. They have stuffed up and have, consequently, been "fined" by the Corrections department. It was a bad idea, in principle and practice, and is being shown to be so.

  1. Of course no one escapes from Corrections run prisons?

Escapes from Mangaroa near Hastings have over previously been on an open door basis almost - then of course there were the prisoners on the roof late last year.

You are way off the pace on this one RW.

  2. Agree with pdm; state-run prisons have not been immune from escape. At least Serco now has a strong financial incentive to stop escapes from happening, and the public purse is $150k richer.
